- Oluwayemisi Mafe (Moderator)
Emotional and psychological trauma is usually the result of extraordinary stressful events that shatters one’s sense of security, making one feel helpless. This can also leave one struggling with upsetting emotions, memories and anxiety that would not go away.
The loss of a loved one, failure of exams, Intentional coercion, accidents, deformities sound mundane, or even normal but sometimes if not, many times have devastating effects on one’s psychic without one realizing it. Threats and verbal abuse, domestic violence, toxic relationships, political violence, rape, sexual assault at work and home can seriously impair another person’s psychological integrity and be detrimental to a woman’s mental health.
Growing acts of violence against women serve as a strong barrier to women accessing their right to participate fully and equally in politics and public life. Nearly 1 in 5 women have experienced completed or attempted rape in their lifetimes from close acquaintances and strangers. Domestic violence has become a daily occurrence.
The more frightened and helpless you feel, the more likely you are to be traumatized.
This plenary session intends to provide women with the tools to use in coping with such, the patterns to watch out for, and the solutions to such traumas.
