Professor Folasade Ogunsola is the first female Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, a renowned Nigerian academic, Medical doctor, and public health expert, widely recognized for her contributions to infection prevention and control, education, research, and leadership. She was the pioneer Deputy Vice-Chancellor of development services at the University of Lagos and the first female Provost of its College of Medicine. She obtained her MBChB from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), going on to specialize in Pathology (a subspecialty of Medical Microbiology obtaining Fellowship of the National Postgraduate College and West African College of Physicians by examination and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists UK by Publications. She also obtained a master’s degree with distinction (Unilag) and a Ph.D. in Medical Microbiology (Univ of Wales, Cardiff). Her research focuses on infectious diseases, with an emphasis on infection control, antimicrobial resistance, and HIV/AIDS prevention. She has been inducted as a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences and is a foundation Fellow of The National Academy of Medicine and Academy of Medical Specialties.
A dedicated public health advocate, Professor Ogunsola has played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s efforts to combat infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Ebola, and COVID-19. She has collaborated with international bodies like the World Health Organization (WHO), CDC, African CDC, and the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to develop strategies for infection prevention.
In her leadership roles, she has prioritized academic excellence, research innovation, Internationalisation, and the digital transformation of education, aiming to position the University of Lagos as a leading institution in Africa and the world. Beyond her academic and public health work, she is committed to mentoring young scientists, especially women in STEM fields. She actively engages with communities to promote healthcare awareness and education across Nigeria.
