Funke Opeke is Managing Director, West Africa. She was appointed in April 2022 following the acquisition by Equinix of MainOne of which she was the founder and Chief Executive Officer. She spearheaded the development and implementation of the MainOne Cable System, a private submarine cable system that connects Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Portugal.
Through MainOne, she has played a crucial role in the development of broadband infrastructure in Nigeria by building terrestrial fiber optic networks and data centers in Lagos, Accra, and Abidjan; in addition to the submarine cable, which has expanded West Africa’s internet capacity and connectivity options.
Funke holds degrees in Electrical Engineering, a bachelor’s degree from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, and a master’s degree from Columbia University, New York. She has received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions to Nigeria’s internet growth. She has become an influential voice in advocating for improved broadband access and digital inclusion across the West Africa region.
