Catherine Edeh

First Deaf Female Lawyer In Nigeria

Speaker

Barr. Catherine Chinyere Edeh is a distinguished Nigerian Deaf lawyer, human rights advocate, and the Founder and Executive Director of the Voice of Disability Initiative (VDI), an organization championing inclusion, gender equality, and the rights of persons with disabilities in Nigeria.

Becoming Deaf at the age of nine as a result of a medical complication, Barr. Catherine transformed what could have been a life of silence, despair, and doom into a powerful platform for social justice, advocacy, and activism. Her lived experience of stigma and exclusion became the foundation for her life’s mission: to challenge systemic barriers and amplify the voices of women and girls with disabilities across Nigeria and beyond.

A Mandela Washington Fellow, Humphrey School Alumna of the University of Minnesota, and former Expert Member on Disaster Risk Reduction with the World Federation of the Deaf, Barr. Edeh has addressed global leaders on disability inclusion, gender equality, and human rights.

Through VDI, she has led groundbreaking advocacy and community programs on inclusive education, access to justice, economic empowerment, and sexual and reproductive health and rights for women and girls with disabilities, ushering in inclusive growth in many States across Nigeria.

Her vision is anchored in her unshakable belief that persons with disabilities are capable of driving change—echoing Archimedes’ timeless words: “Give us a lever and a place to stand, and we will move the earth.”

In recognition of her exceptional leadership, courage, and lifelong commitment to building a truly inclusive society, we proudly honor Barr. Catherine Chinyere Edeh, a woman who turned silence into strength and gave voice to the voiceless, has received many awards and heartwarming support from well-meaning members of the public.

Catherine is grateful to God and the universe for a life of purpose and impact.
